How do you work out a pay rise? Multiply your current salary by (1 + pay rise % ÷ 100). A 3.5% pay rise on NZ$70,000 is NZ$2,450, for a new salary of NZ$72,450. To find the percentage, subtract old pay from new pay, divide by old pay and multiply by 100.
How to calculate a pay rise
Pay rise % = (New salary − Old salary) ÷ Old salary × 100
New salary = Old salary × (1 + Pay rise % ÷ 100)
Worked example
Your annual salary is NZ$70,000 and you get a 3.5% pay rise. Multiply NZ$70,000 by 1.035: your new annual salary is NZ$72,450, which is NZ$2,450 more a year or NZ$204 a month.
Going the other way, a annual salary that rises from NZ$60,000 to NZ$61,800 is a 3% pay rise: (NZ$61,800 − NZ$60,000) ÷ NZ$60,000 × 100.
