Statutory redundancy pay formula

Redundancy pay = Weeks earned × Weekly pay (capped)
Age during the year of serviceWeeks of pay per full year
Under 220.5
22 to 401
41 and over1.5

Years are counted back from the date your employment ends. Only complete years count, up to a maximum of 20, so the most you can earn is 30 weeks of pay.

Worked example

Age 46 at redundancy, 10 full years of service, weekly pay of £900 in Great Britain. Pay is capped at £751. The last 5 years were at age 41 or over (7.5 weeks) and the 5 before at age 36 to 40 (5 weeks), so 12.5 weeks × £751 = £9,387.50.

Great Britain£751£22,530£719 a week

The cap that applies depends on the date you are dismissed. Your employer can pay more under an enhanced redundancy scheme. The first £30,000 of redundancy pay is usually tax-free.

How to use the redundancy pay calculator

  1. Choose where you work. England, Scotland and Wales use the Great Britain cap. Northern Ireland has its own, higher cap.
  2. Enter your date of birth. Your age in each year of service decides how many weeks you earn for that year.
  3. Enter your gross weekly pay. The redundancy pay calculator caps it automatically.
  4. Enter your start date and redundancy date. Only complete years count, up to 20.
  5. Click Calculate. You see the weeks earned, the weekly pay used and your statutory redundancy pay.

Example for a younger employee

Age 30 at redundancy, 6 full years of service, weekly pay of £500. All 6 years were between age 22 and 40, so each earns 1 week: 6 × £500 = £3,000.

Who qualifies for statutory redundancy pay

  • Employees with at least 2 years of continuous service whose job is made redundant.
  • Not usually: self-employed contractors, freelancers, and employees dismissed for reasons other than redundancy.
  • Your employer may pay more under an enhanced redundancy scheme. The redundancy pay calculator shows the statutory minimum.
